Citing a Book

Citing a book in print

Structure:
Author, F.M. (Year of Publication). Title of work. Publisher City, State: Publisher.

Example:
James, Henry. (2009). The ambassadors. Rockville, MD: Serenity Publishers.

Note: Capitalize the first letter of the first word of the title and any subtitles (the first word that follows a colon), as well as the first letter of any proper nouns.

Citing an Article

Citing a journal article found online (in a database or elsewhere)

Structure:

Author, F.M. (Publication year). Article Title. Periodical Title, Volume(Issue), pp.-pp. doi:XX.XXXXX or Retrieved from journal URL

Note: Database information and retrieval date are not required in APA journal article citations.

Example:


Trier, J. (2007). “Cool” engagements with YouTube: Part 2. Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, 50(7), 598-603. doi:10.1598/JAAL.50.7.8

Structure:

Author, F.M., Author F.M., & Author F.M. (Publication year). Article Title. Periodical Title, Volume(Issue), pp.-pp.

Example:

Lin, M.G., Hoffman, E.S., & Borengasser, C. (2013). Is social media too social for class? A case study of Twitter use. Tech Trends, 57(2), 39-45.

Citing a Website

Citing a general website article with an author

Note: Many sources have APA citation formats for their online versions (e.g., online newspapers, dictionaries and encyclopedias).

Structure:

Author, F.M. (Year, Month Date of publication). Article title. Retrieved from URL

Note: Only include the retrieval date if the content is likely to change over time (such as wikis). If necessary, include the retrieval month date, year, (in that order) between “Retrieved” and “from URL” in the last segment of the citation.

Note: When a website does not have an article title, replace it in the citation with the website title.

Citing a general website article without an author

Structure:

Article title. (Year, Month Date of publication). Retrieved from URL

Example:
